Reflection of the artist as an old man
Four glasses downed before the rainhas dried on the brim of my hat.
I’m fingering coins in my palm,
praying for the price.
I must be at least seventy,
a body held together by
tight knotted scarf
thin black overcoat
and blacker pints.
A wife dead,
or gone, my children just
a card at Christmas?
In the mirror, I see
a young couple embrace,
such a big-picture background,
so many dark possibilities ,
can our whole lives be painted
in a moment of light?
such a big-picture background,
so many dark possibilities ,
can our whole lives be painted
in a moment of light?
Fugh it, we're back to miserable monday again...Ooops!

Brilliant poem and very moving.
Very poignant TFE - beautifully put but with luck, just a bad dream. May I point out that 70 is the new 50!! It is not old - well not quite!
I wasn't sure if this had to be at 7pm too! I've just finished mine and will post it in the next hour or so!
You're a fierce taskmaster so you are!
x
Just posted my 'poem' and am off to check out Dominic's. Love the photo - my kids would have loved that when they were young.
"a body held together by
tight knotted scarf" wow, I love this.
I am just about to post mine TFE - like the idea of your being held together with a scarf! Cafes don't feature highly in my life-style, so it,s Spotted in the Supermarket instead. Enjoy - posted at 15.09 (word verification is hic is this significant or is it significant?)
Nice poem!.. I'm a sucker for things about ole fellas... really beautifully observed :-)
Love the new photo too.. have they got a generator for those amps or what?.lol
Brilliant poem, TFE!
I'm posting my Monday poem right here in the Eejit Cafe:
A Choir member's View from the Altar of a Catholic Church
Singing the hymns quite harmonious
We implore the congregation to join us;
Some do, most don’t; they’re not so wired
But I wonder what does transpire
In those dogmatically trained minds
As the good priest moves through
The rituals sublime, taking his time.
Then ‘in medias res,’ a child, God’s child
Anxious and free, boldly implores with glee
“Time to go! Please, come with me!”
“I’m already there,” says my mind to his.
I left with the first hymn, and the views
Of the curious stares, inhabiting the pews.
Never mind mine Mrs Niamh, where's yours? Well? I'm waiting. And forget about electro picnics, huge crowded poetry recitals and radio shows- this is much more mportant :)
I like your 'blacker pints'.
Mine's done.

The EEjit cafe? Mmm ,I like that!EEjit Bar and Lounge? Anyway an interesting poem this one Jeanne from a different and revealing perspective. If there is a zeitgeist around struggling catholics (myself included)this surely taps into it.It struck a real chord, pardon the pun, with me.
Nice one amigo, mucho gracias!
Tanx Rachel.
Had to wait till i got somewhere public to spot a vic... i mean subject, 'n anyway I'm waiting till 7pm. That's my plan anyhoo.
That is a beautiful poem, TFE. You have great depth, you know. :D
I'll get a poem up by the end of the day! Of course, it's only noon here.
Yes,Susan, I am like the ocean-I make people sick Ha ha! But thanks and delighted your joining in!
In fact come on in everybody ,the water is lovely!
Hi TFE, very impressed that you found mine before I'd told you. Had to be out at work this morning and away all day. You're right - it is an academy with "no rules but one", which I like. Very much, in fact, as this week I wrote in a way I hadn't before.
Checking out the rest, all with that same initial, single rule, is the best bit.
First two lines of yours pulled me straight in - good. And such a sharp, bitter taste by the end.
Holy Feck! Quick off the blocks is right - lookitemall!!!!
Here's mine; http://pjnolan.blogspot.com/2009/05/monday-poetry-cafe-scene-certain.html
hey P Nolan, I'm mainly bad ,occasionally good but never Holy, but thanks for the title anyways it has a certain gravitas to it. :) or maybe it should be 0:) That's supposed to be a halo.
Sorry so late. Many brain cells left in the field in Stradbally. Also didn't take so much time.
Okay... here we go
http://domesticoubliette.blogspot.com/2009/09/more-tfe-inspired-poetry.html
I just said something similar about Rachel's Monday offering: this has instantly become one of my favourite TFE poems.
This is great, and I really did mean to join in but I failed to take into consideration that today is my son's birthday so I've been a bit distracted.
Thanks Dominic and I like Rachel's too.Coincidentally both self portraits, one from the past and one from the potential futur. That she may not have written it without this propmt is a buzz that I never envisaged.
Hey Eryl, very Happy Birthday to your son, hope you all had a really great day. Join in next time if you can, you'd be more than welcome! :)
Well, ok, I forgot. I've just done it. It's 12.15am, am I in time??? http://bt-thecraftygardener.blogspot.com/
That's me if you get time to look.
I want Titus's dog. : )
Oh this sounds good! How can I join in?
I do like the way you think. Thanks for the vicarious introductions. -Jayne
Thanks BT, it's never too late, until it's too late, :)
