Feelin Good? Full of energy?

No? Well how about some Dr Feelgood then? Not the greatest band in the world but still ,like us all ,they have their own sumptin' and I'm a bit of a fan of the guitarist Wilko Johnson (Wearing black) who though somewhat subdued here still executes his trademark manic OCD style back and forth manouvres.

Now for something else, Christy Moore. Such was the energy he expelled during live performances that he thought he was going to die one night on stage, so gave it up for a while.I saw him on his 50 birthday do a bodhran (hand held goat skin drum) solo that put the hairs up on the back of my neck, but even so I wondered at the time if he would burst such was the enormous strain on him. He's back a while now, older ,more restrained and with the support of guitarist Declan Sinnott to take some of the pressure. Here he is in 2006 aged about 61 and still be times putting out some Kilowatts.

Finally some footage of the late Ian Dury with The Blockheads singing 'Sweet Gene Vincent' Love this song..Not the best of singers but a great performer backed by some brilliant musicians including my old pal Wilko in the best of form.

'white face, black shirt

white socks, black shoes

black hair, white strat

bled white, died black'

'but when your leg still hurts and you need more shirts, you betta get back on the road !'

Milk and Alcohol! Used to have a crush on Lee Brilleaux.

And a post that's two-thirds Essex. Jolly good.

Lovely header, TFE - is that for Bench of the Week?

I'm going to listen to your tracks now - I do like Ian Dury - haven't heard the others yet.

(I wish I could enter all your poetry events, but it usually takes me about a year to write a poem!!)

There's something really exciting about almost any kind of drum played well. I can remember wanting to play a drum when I first went to school, but only the boys were allowed and I had to make do with a tambourine! It just wasn't the same at all.

Christy Moore - now you're talking my language TFE - at last!
Ride On and The Song of the wandering Aongus are my two favourites. I play him when I am driving through the countryside in the car (alone) so that I can sing along with him.

It doesn't say a lot for me in my twenties that I knew all the words to Billericay Dickie.

The first songs I ever learnt with the guitar were Christy Moore songs. Quite often play Ride On in schools. (I sing Back Home in Derry a lot too). I saw him (10 years ago?) in Redcar of all places. Am reminded of it when ever I hear him sing "I was over on the Mainland, doing me act in some old civic hall..."

I had the same fears for some Flamenco dancers I saw on my recent travels. The energy expenditure was unbelievable.

Lee was cool.He died at only 41, too young.
Milk and alcohol? That was the worst pint ever!

Totalfeckineejit said...

No Raph, it's a bench for no reason at all!
A year is a long gestation for a poem, but I look forward to seeing it :)

I've actually seen Wilko live a few times in London. Always enjoyed him, and watching his manic bass player, with the long curly hair and mad eyes. Now this all takes me back a bit, I must say!

Totalfeckineejit said...

Thanks Mrs N,The SHOp is my favourite mag in the whole wide woild!

Totalfeckineejit said...

That's really cool B,I know from looking at you tube that Wilko is still going strong- even if he hasn't a hair on his head! I think the bass player is Norman Watt Roy , he's totally deadly and is in the Ian Dury clip somewhere.

Thanks for the tunes! Christy Moore is great. Totally agree with the 'fear of dying on-stage' as you often wonder how much one man can sweat before ... you know...

Totalfeckineejit said...

Thanks Niamh G! Yeh, you would wonder if the dyin' on stage may actually be Christy drowning in his own sweat!
